Iraq, Jordan and Egypt agree Energy Projects

Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and Jordan’s King Abdullah arrived in Baghdad on Sunday for a fresh round of talks aimed at strengthening cooperation between the countries.

It is the first visit by an Egyptian head of state to Iraq since Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait in 1990.

The leaders agreed on the importance of the electrical interconnector project between the three countries, and linking the gas transmission networks between Iraq and Egypt through Jordan.

They also pushed for the completion of the Basra-Aqaba crude oil pipeline, which will provide a new outlet for the export of Iraqi oil through Jordan.

Iraqi Tankers Re-Registered in Umm Qasr

Two oil tankers owned by the State Company for Maritime Transport (SCMT) have been transferred from Jordanian registration to registration in the Iraqi port of Basra, following the lifting of sanctions.

Iraqi Transport Minister, Captain Nasser Hussain Bandar Al-Shibli [Captain Nasser Hussein Bandar Al-Shibli], raised the Iraqi flags on the vessels, the Al-Asma’i and the Al-Qurna, at a ceremony at the port of Umm Qasr on Sunday.

Basra-Aqaba Pipeline may be extended into Egypt

Iraqi and Egyptian officials have discussed the possibility of extending the Basra-Aqaba pipeline to Egypt.

The matter was discussed at a meeting on Wednesday between Iraq’s Oil Minister Ihssan Abdul-Jabbar Ismail the Egyptian Ambassador to Iraq.

A press release after the meeting said that extending the pipeline into Egypt would be “an important addition and a new outlet for Iraqi oil exports to North Africa”.

Jordan “negotiating New Oil Contract with Iraq”

Iraq’s State Oil Marketing Organization (SOMO) has reportedly said that Jordan is negotiating with Iraq to resume purchases of crude oil.

Shafaq News Agency quotes the company’s Director, Alaa al-Yasiri, as saying that Iraq exported no crude oil to Jordan in December due to the expiration of the old contract.

Jordan Finds Gas Field near Iraqi Border

Jordan has found new reserves of natural gas at its Risha field, close to its border with Iraq.

Hala Zawati, the Jordanian Energy Minister, said:

“… drilling operations at Well 53 in the Risha field have shown promising results, while exploration and drilling operations continue at wells 50, 51 and 52.”

Iraq seeks bids for Iraq-Jordan Oil Pipeline

Iraq’s Ministry of Oil has invited bids fto build the Iraq-Jordan oil pipeline.

The first phase will be built on the Iraqi side, stretching 700 km from Rumaila to Haditha. This will have a capacity of 2.25 million barrels per day (bpd). This will be built on an engineering, procurement, construction and financing (EPCF) contract model.

The second phase, on the Jordanian side, will run 900 km from Haditha to the port of Aqaba. This section will be built on a Build Own Operate Transfer (BOOT) model.

Bids will be accepted from qualified companies up to the end of May, with a decision to be made by the end of 2020.

First Shipment of Iraqi Crude Oil to Jordan

The first shipment of Iraqi crude oil to Jordan under a new deal agreed in Februay has been sent on Sunday.

According to a statement from the Jordanian Minstry Of Energy And Mineral Resources, the first trucks left from Baiji station in Kirkuk on Sunday, and are expected to reach the oil refinery in the city of Zarqa on Tuesday.

Jordanian Energy Minister Hala Zawati said more than 200 tankers from Jordan and Iraq will take part in the transport, in an agreement with the transport firm Nael Thiabat and Company.

Iraq is planning to build a new oil pipeline to Jordan which it is banking on to revive revenue sources, after years of war and instability.

In addition to expanding refineries and oil fields, Iraq is also planning to rehabilitate a pipeline via Turkey.

But it is not the first time Iraqis have heard plans like these and many say they will believe it when they see some change in their lives.

Iraq to Export 1m bpd Oil through Jordan

Iraq announced on Thursday the completion of the “technical preparations” to extend a pipeline to export one million barrels of oil per day through Jordan, Petra has reported.

“The export capacity of the Basra-Aqaba pipeline, which runs through Jordan, is expected to reach one million barrels per day (bpd),” Iraqi oil minister, Thamir Al-Ghadhban, said in a statement.

Al-Ghadhban explained that Iraq had completed the planning arrangements of the pipeline’s construction work. “The arrangements included its [the pipeline’s] track, components, absorptive capacity, the mechanisms of linking it to the northern Kirkuk oil fields, funding sources, and implementation and operational means,” he said.

The Iraqi official stressed that his country was only depending on the southern portal city of Basra for oil exports, noting that the ministry has prepared “a major plan for its rehabilitation and development with the aim to increase its export capacity levels.”

The government, Al-Ghadhban pointed out, plans to establish three linked crude oil exporting ports.

Baghdad and Amman recently concluded six bilateral agreements to develop their relations, most notably in the oil and energy sectors. The two governments said the agreements aimed at “revitalising” their economies and strengthening ties between Iraq and Jordan.
