Saudi Arabia allocates Grant for Renovation of Ibn Al Khatib Hospital

Iraq and Saudi Arabia have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) regarding the allocation of a grant from the government of Saudi Arabia to finance the renovation of Ibn Al Khatib Hospital in Baghdad.

The Saudi embassy initially announced its support for the hospital last year, following a fire that killed at least 82 people, and left more than 100 injured.

The grant will be provided through the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD).

During the meeting, Iraq’s Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Dr. Abdul Sattar Hadi Al-Janabi, praised the critical role played by the Kingdom through the SFD in supporting the health sector and the infrastructure in Iraq. He highlighted the importance of the present project in enhancing the livelihood of many Iraqis and their access to essential health services.

According to the official Saudi Press Agency, the Kingdom has allocated $1.5 billion for soft loans through SFD to support development in Iraq.

Construction Starts at 1.6 GW Power Plant in Anbar

Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi has laid the foundation stone for a new power station in the Al-Furat district of Anbar Governorate.

According to a statement from the Media Office of the Prime Minister, the total capacity of the plant is 1,642 megawatts, at a cost of one billion dollars, and the project will take 3 years to complete.

The project consists of four GT26 gas turbine units [from GE], with a unit capacity of 273 megawatts, and two steam units with a capacity of 275 megawatts.

New Plastics Plant opened in Basra

The Minister of Industry and Minerals, Manhal Aziz Al-Khabbaz, has re-opened a factory making low density polyethylene in Basra.

The plant, run by the General Company for Petrochemical Industries, had been idle for more than 12 years.

Capacity is said to be 120 tons per day, with high quality and high purity.

The Minister wished the company further success in its plans to rehabilitate the high-density polyethylene granules production plant.

Iraq confirms June Oil Exports

Iraq’s Ministry of Oil has announced finalised oil exports for June of 101,191,236 barrels, giving an average for the month of 3.373 million barrels per day (bpd), up from the 3.300 million bpd exported in May.

The exports from the oilfields in central and southern Iraq amounted to approximately 97,980,589 barrels, while exports from the Kirkuk fields through the port of Ceyhan amounted to 2,910,887 barrels.

While not explicitly stated by the Ministry, these figures seem to imply that exports by road to Jordan totalled 299,760 barrels for the month.

Revenues for the month were $11.354 billion, at an average price of $112.209 per barrel.

Production at Khor Mor field unaffected by Rocket Attacks

The Khor Mor field in Kurdistan has again been subjected to rocket attacks.

In a statement to the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange, operator Dana Gas said:

“Dana Gas (PJSC) informs the market that two small rockets landed within the Khor Mor Block in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq on the evening of Monday, 25th of July.

“There were no injuries and production operations continue as normal.“

The field was also attacked last month, with two people injured.

Baker Hughes wins Four-Year Contract in Missan

Baker Hughes has said its oilfield services (OFS) division has secured a four-year contract to provide artificial lift solutions for the Missan [Maysan] oilield in Iraq.

In a statement announcing its results for the second quarter of 2022, the US-based company said the contract includes the supply of electrical submersible pumps (ESP), surface equipment and dedicated field services.

The ESPs will be utilized to maximize oil recovery and extend system run-life in harsh environments, it added.

The company, which also has contracts at the Nasiriyah and Garraf [Gharraf] oil fields, recently committed to pulling out of operations in Iraqi Kurdistan, following the Federal Supreme Court ruling that oil contracts signed with the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) are unconstitutional.

IDC completes two Drilling Projects in Iraq

The Iraqi Drilling Company (IDC) has recently completed the drilling of oil well 48 at the Nasiriyah oil field.

The company’s general manager, Engineer Basem Abdel Karim Nasser, said this was part of the contract with Dhi Qar Oil Company (DQOC) to drill 20 oil wells at the field in cooperation with US-based Weatherford.

Drilling operations were carried out over 18 months using the IDC 44 drilling rig.

IDC has also recently completed the drilling of oil well J120P in the Al-Gharraf field, which reached a depth of 3,037 meters.

Nasser said this was the thirteenth well drilled as part of the contract with the Malaysian Petronas company to drill 28 directional oil wells in the Al-Gharraf oil field in Dhi Qar Governorate.

The work was carried out using the IDC 54 drilling rig (pictured), which has a power of 2000 HP.

The company owns 43 drilling and reclamation rigs distributed in the Iraqi oil fields.

$25m agreement for Medical Waste Management in Iraq

Ministry of Health and UNDP partner to address medical waste management challenges under $25m agreement

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Iraq has signed a US$25 million agreement with Iraq’s Ministry of Health (MoH) to strengthen medical waste management in the country.

The agreement is part of the $100 million Iraq Covid-19 Vaccination Project (ICVP), a loan financed by the World Bank to support the Government of Iraq’s rollout of the COVID-19 vaccine.

Under the agreement, UNDP will procure and install approximately 180 shredder autoclaves which convert medical waste – largely from COVID-19 vaccinations – such as syringes, ampules, dressings and personal protective equipment like masks and gloves into ordinary waste for safe disposal. These efforts support MoH’s safe deployment of the vaccine throughout Iraq.

“We confirm the ongoing partnership between the Federal Ministry of Health and all local and international supporting bodies for their technical support, and for developing infrastructure to strengthen the provision of health services across all levels of government and the Kurdistan Region. We are grateful for all the efforts supporting the Federal Ministry of Health and its departments in addressing health sector challenges.” says the Federal Minister of Health, Dr. Hani Musa Badr Al-Uqabi.

New Oil Finds reported in Iraq’s Anbar Province

The Governor of Anbar, Ali Farhan (pictured), has reportedly announced new oil discoveries in the province.

According to the state-controlled Iraqi News Agency (INA), the finds are in the Nukhaib and Tharthar areas.

Farhan is quoted as saying that, “the local government in Anbar worked to prepare the atmosphere for oil exploration and provided the security effort for companies in the province,” expressing his hope that, “the Ministry of Oil will take steps to complete oil explorations after canceling the contract with the Korean company.“

There was no mention of the size of the fields, and the news is not yet carried on the Ministry of Oil website.

TotalEnergies Re-affirms Commitment to Iraq Energy Projects

France’s TotalEnergies has re-affirmed its commitment to energy projects in Iraq.

Following a meeting in Paris with Iraq’s Minister of Oil, Ihsan Abdul-Jabbar Ismail, the Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies, Patrick Pouyanne, said that Iraq is one of the most promising countries in attracting global investment for energy projects.

He added that TotalEnergies is ,”committed to partnering with the Iraqi government for its keenness to deal with us transparently, and to achieve the principles of mutual trust in a way that serves the common interests.”

Last year, Iraq and TotalEnergies agreed a series of high-value investments in Iraq, including:

  • The construction of a new gas gathering network and treatment units to supply the local power stations, with TotalEnergies also bringing its expertise to optimize the oil and gas production of the Ratawi field, by building and operating new capacities.
  • The construction of a large-scale seawater treatment unit to increase water injection capacities in southern Iraq fields without increasing water withdrawals as the country is currently facing a water-stress situation. This water injection is required to maintain pressure in several fields and as such will help optimizing the production of the natural resources in the Basra region.
  • The construction and operation of a photovoltaic power plant with a capacity of 1 GWp to supply electricity to the grid in the Basra region.
