Iran Ready to Extend Gas Export Deal with Iraq

The CEO of the National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC) has said Iran is ready to extend its gas export deal with Iraq.

Majid Chegeni, who is also the Deputy Minister of Petroleum for Gas Affairs, said:

“Our relationship with Iraq is strategic and apart from economic relations, we have deep cultural and religious relations that are very important. The more our cooperation, especially in the field of energy, the deeper and more objective these relations will be.”

Iran “Appoints Special Envoy” on Iraq Petroleum Issues

Iran’s has reportedly appointed a special representative for petroleum issues involving Iraq.

According to ABNA24, Seyyed Abbas Beheshti will coordinate with the National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC) and the Central Bank of Iran to accelerate payments of arrears.

It adds that Iraq owes Iran nearly $6 billion for imports of natural gas to produce electricity.

Iran Slashes Natural Gas Exports to Iraq

An Iranian official has said that Iran’s natural gas (methane) exports to Iraq have been reduced, but not because of arrears owed by Iraq.

Mohammad Reza Julaei , the Dispatching Director of the National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC), told Shana that exports have been reduced by 38 million cubic meters per day; they were believed to be running about 40 to 45 million cubic meters per day previously.

But he said that this was done based on an agreement and with prior notice, and has “nothing to do with [Iraq’s] arrears to Iran.”

He added, however, that the need to settle the debts is still on the agenda.

Iran to Boost Gas Exports to Iraq

A top Iranian energy official unveiled plans for a rise in natural gas exports to neighboring Iraq next year.

In an interview with Tasnim on Saturday, Managing Director of the National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC) Hamid Reza Araqi said the country’s exports of natural gas to Iraq will increase during the spring and summer of 2018.

Iran’s gas exports to Iraq, which now stand at 14 million cubic meters a day, are planned to reach the maximum capacity within three years, he added.

On June 22, at the beginning of summer, Iran started to export natural gas to Iraq after years of negotiations and settlement of financial problems.

Iran’s daily gas exports to Iraq are to reach 35 million cubic meters at the final stage.

Tehran and Baghdad signed a deal on the exports of natural gas from the giant South Pars Gas Field in 2013.

Under the deal, the Iranian gas is delivered to Sadr, Baghdad and al-Mansouryah power plants in Iraq through a 270-kilometer pipeline.
